Oregano, the Signature Herb of the Mediterranean Cuisine!
Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family & is native in the Mediterranean region. The word is derived from Classical Greek ὀρίγανον (orī́ganon), a compound Greek term that consists of ὄρος (óros) meaning “mountain”, & γάνος (gános) meaning “brightness”, thus, “brightness of the mountain”. Oregano is a culinary herb, used for the flavour of its leaves, which can be more flavorful when dried than fresh. It has an aromatic, warm & slightly bitter taste, which can vary in intensity. Good-quality oregano may be strong enough almost to numb the tongue.
